Catalog description

Investigates the molecules and mechanisms underlying cellular function from an engineering perspective, emphasizing physical, chemical, and quantitative approaches. Students analyze how molecular structure and energetics give rise to cellular behaviors such as gene expression, signaling, mechanics, and division, and they apply these principles to contemporary problems in medicine, biotechnology, bionanotechnology, synthetic biology, and tissue engineering. The course blends rigorous theory with critical reading of current papers and quantitative problem-solving.
