Catalog description

This seminar addresses the social, economic, political, and cultural issues regarding the development and uses of artificial intelligence (AI). Putting the origins of and debates on AI in sociological context, the course covers a range topics such as algorithmic bias and discrimination, surveillance capitalism, politics and ethics of data, misinformation and threats to democracy, work automation, and risks of societal catastrophe. Taking this course will equip students with the basic knowledge and orientation to productively engage in debates about AI and will provide students with a solid foundation for further coursework in this area.
