Catalog description

This course provides an introduction to social psychology from a sociological perspective, with particular attention to classical approaches such as symbolic interactionism, exchange theory, and ethnomethodology. Students will examine how individuals develop, negotiate, and transform their sense of self and identities, as well as how they influence the self-concepts of others. The course explores how culture, class, race, gender, and sexuality in American society shape experiences, thoughts, feelings, and actions. Students will also learn how microsociology provides tools for understanding everyday social interactions and the small-scale processes through which people create, maintain, and change social life across domains such as family, intimacy, morality, deviance, illness, stigma, education, work, and social action. While centered on the individual in society, specific topics and examples may vary by instructor. You may not take this course if you have already received credit for SOC 305.
