Catalog description

This elective serves to enhance the student's awareness of the role of the pathologist and anatomic pathology in patient management. At the end of the elective, the student will: 1) Gain knowledge on histopathology/cytopathology of common diseases tissues 2) Understand basic gross examination of specimens 3) Observe tissue processing and intraoperative consultations 4) Observe and/or perform hands on bone marrow procedures with clinicopathological correlation. An effort will be made to tailor the elective experience to the needs and interests of the individual student. If no specific interests are identified, a general elective will be arranged consisting of short rotations with pathologists and pathology assistants. The student may attend tumor board presentations in anatomic pathology every Tuesday. Observation and participation in fetal autopsies in also optional, but encouraged. The student may choose to spend time in clinical pathology or blood bank. The student may make a formal presentation during the last week of the elective. Evaluation will be based upon the student's knowledge, acquisition, interest, and active participation. Prerequisite: Medical Basic Sciences.
