Medicine - Internal Medicine Clerkship

Catalog description

During the clinical clerkship, students acquire a comprehensive understanding of adult disease processes. Instruction is grounded in direct patient care activities, including history-taking, physical examination, and the systematic evaluation of laboratory and imaging studies. Students further refine their clinical reasoning through the expansion of differential diagnoses and the formulation of evidence-based assessments and management plans. These competencies are supported through a variety of structured educational experiences. The core clerkship provides sustained exposure to the management of hospitalized patients in collaboration with Internal Medicine residents. In addition, students may request a two-week elective experience in an Internal Medicine subspecialty or ambulatory setting. All clinical activities are conducted at the University of Kansas Health System and the Kansas City Veterans Administration Hospital. Prerequisite: Medical Basic Sciences.
