Catalog description

This course provides an applied, population-level perspective on health challenges in an interconnected world. It focuses on the principles and practice of global public health intervention, including the measurement of health status, burden of disease analysis, and the implementation and evaluation of programs in low- and middle-income countries. The course examines key transnational health issues (e.g., emerging infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, maternal/child health) and the complex interplay of environmental, organizational, and financial determinants of health. A significant portion of the course is dedicated to analyzing the structures of international health organizations, exploring the process of policymaking, priority-setting, and financing (e.g., foreign aid, domestic budgets) that shape the delivery of care and the reduction of health disparities at the community and national levels. Prerequisite: HSCI 340 or permission of the instructor.
