Catalog description

The purpose of this course is to familiarize international medical graduates (IMG’s) with the US healthcare system by providing an overview of the day-to-day operations including patient care and clinical research within the clinical setting at a premier US academic health center. Through observing clinical care, observing research or participating in research, the international graduate is better prepared to enter the US National Residency Match Program (NRMP) and acclimate to residency within the US healthcare system. By immersion at KUMC/UKHS, participants will observe the culture, the cascade of patient care, grand rounds, department meetings, and all the state-of-the-art technologies and systems in place to support the complete eco-system of health care. The learning experience will be tailored to individual needs with personalized instruction for the opportunity to learn new skills and competencies, exposure to new research developments or clinical practice. The progress of the student will be monitored through weekly laboratory meetings with members of the research lab or weekly contact with the learner and/or clinical instructor in the clinical setting. The learners will self-assess their progress and receive constructive feedback from appropriate individuals in the clinical setting. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor in the Office of International Programs.
