Catalog description
This course is an introduction to the study of film form through the analysis of cinema as an artistic medium. The main objective is to provide students with literacy and fluency in film’s unique language by identifying a filmmaker’s choices and learning how they impact an audience. Students will explore the techniques of mise-en-scene, direction, cinematography, sound, and editing, and how they work together to generate intellectual and emotional meaning. Developing the ability to engage with and understand film, the course will consist of weekly readings, lectures, film screenings, essays, discussions, and a final presentation. Using terms and concepts from the coursework, students will be asked to apply their comprehension to a selection of films. Satisfies: Arts and Humanities (AH) , Goal 1 Outcome 1 (GE11)
