Catalog description
An introduction to translation studies that integrates East Asian and Western translation theory, East Asian historical and contemporary cultural contexts, and daily hands-on practice working with an East Asian language of choice (Chinese, Japanese, or Korean). Readings provide the basis for translation practice exercises, and include topics such as translation strategies, intersemiotic transfer, linguistic relativity, dialects, second language acquisition, and artificial intelligence and machine translation. Prerequisite: At least two years of language (Chinese, Japanese, or Korean), or by instructor approval. Satisfies: Global Culture (GLBC)
