Effective educators start with a strong foundation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), proactively designing instruction that supports access, engagement, and success for all students. UDL helps remove barriers from the start, creating flexible learning environments that meet a wide range of needs. In this competency, you’ll explore how inclusive instructional planning can be supported by a broader system of layered supports. You’ll also examine the historical and legal foundations that have shaped current approaches to accessibility and equity in education—and consider how those foundations inform your role in meeting the needs of students who require additional or individualized support.
