Explore the evolution of contemporary design through diverse historical, methodological, and theoretical lenses in this comprehensive course. Though in-depth case studies delve into various realms, including industrial design, graphic design, and architecture. Analyze objects as reflections of broader cultural, economic, and political influences that have shaped modern design history. Gain an in-depth understanding of individual works to unravel how they embody the social, material, and economic challenges faced by designers. By completing the Design History sequence, students will adeptly identify and discuss key figures, events, and trends in modern design, skillfully analyze objects and primary sources for historical significance and contemporary relevance and master the art of crafting clear and concise arguments for written, spoken, and visually communicated forms of expression. Prerequisite: ADS 340 or ADS 341 or with permission of the instructor.
