Introduction to Fire Science

Catalog description

This course provides an overview to fire protection; career opportunities in fire protection and related fields; philosophy and history of fire protection/services; fire loss analysis; organization and function of public and private fire protection services; fire departments as part of local government; laws and regulations affecting the fire services; fire service nomenclature; specific fire protection functions; basic fire chemistry and physics; introduction to fire protection systems; introduction to fire strategy and tactics. Students will have the opportunity to participate in cadet and externship programs at local fire departments, as well as hands-on practical lab experience on the main campus. This course will meet the FESHE Guidelines for Principles of Emergency Services, as does the course it will eventually replace. This course will provide basic and introductory firefighting skills, preparing students for the Basic Operations Firefighting Academy.
