Joliet Junior College · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course is the first semester of a two-semester course in organic chemistry. The CHEM 209-210 sequence is designed for students majoring in chemistry, chemical engineering, biology, pre-dentistry, pre-medicine, pre-pharmacy, pre-veterinary medicine, and other students desiring a serious, in-depth examination of organic chemistry. The course content includes: the study of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, cyclic hydrocarbons, alkyl halides, nucleophilic substitution and elimination reactions, organometallics, NMR spectroscopy, IRspectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, and sterochemistry. The knowledge of reaction mechanisms is stressed to provide unifying principles. The laboratory complements the topics above.
