African American History

Catalog description

This course explores the history of people of African ancestry in the United States from the colonial period to the present day with special focus on the transition from slavery to freedom to full citizenship over the course of the 18th–20th centuries. Among the topics studied are African American religion and spirituality, African American involvement in political and social reform movements, the role played by African Americans in the U.S. economy, and African American contributions to American culture. Interracial interaction, the social construction of “blackness,” and the construction of gender roles within the African American community are also major themes of the course. Prerequisite(s): ENG1020 or ENG1024 or English placement. Offered at Providence 3 Semester Credits
