Introduction to Legal Interpretation

Catalog description

The course will provide students with knowledge of the US legal system and the interpreting process. The areas covered include knowledge of the structure of the courts (federal and state systems), stages of the legal process (e.g., pre-trial proceedings, trials and post-trial proceedings), ethical principles and standards of professional conduct of interpreters, and the ability to apply this knowledge in practical case scenarios. Students will develop basic skills in the three modes of interpreting: simultaneous, consecutive and sight interpreting used in legal settings. Students will also learn basic note-taking skills for the enhancement of memory recall during consecutive interpretation. Instruction is in Spanish.
