Ethnicity, Race and Nationality: Identity Construction from a Cross-Cultural Perspective

This course explores the concepts of identity, ethnicity and nationality from a cross-cultural perspective. Drawing upon theories from multiple social scientific disciplines, this course examines how identity is defined and how societies use such constructions for, among other things, nation-building. Students learn to apply the sociological imagination for understanding in-group and out-group interactions cross-culturally. Theoretical readings are supplemented with case studies from developed and developing countries across different time periods.
