Philosophical Foundations of Social Inquiry

Catalog description

This course introduces problems within the philosophy of science and their relevancy to social science research. The course addresses the historical topics of induction, underdetermination, falsificationism, logical empiricism, as well as the nature of scientific revolutions and epistemological anarchism. Contemporary topics include the role of values within social research, scientific explanation, and the debate between realism and antirealism.
