Race and Capitalism in the United States

What is the relationship between race and capitalism? How have individuals, institutions and nation-states employed racial categories and hierarchies to generate and distribute wealth and limited resources? This course introduces students to the conjunctive study of American racial politics and American political economy. Specifically, this course introduces students to the concept of "racial capitalism," which posits that race and capitalism are deeply intertwined, mutually constituted institutions. Students will become familiar with foundational literature and recent scholarship in the field that applies theories of racial capitalism to American politics and culture.
