Politics of Human Rights in the United States

Catalog description

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the study of human rights within a U.S. political context. Course participants will examine the impact of federal, state and local legislation, the influence of US political actors, the work of advocacy organizations along with the responses from government institutions (the bureaucracy) and the American judicial system. The course will further student understanding of the complexities of human rights controversies and how consideration of these rights is conducted in practice in American society today.
