Catalog description

Literacy-based field placement provides middle school preservice students with opportunities to observe and work with children and teachers in middle school settings (grades 6-8). Students will explore the complex nature of language acquisition and reading including skills in phonemic and other phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary development, and comprehension strategies for adolescent learners. Additional skills shall include proficiency in writing strategies, as well as the ability to foster appreciation of a variety of fiction and nonfiction text and independent reading for adolescent learners. Students will have first-hand opportunities to learn about middle level education in the context of real classrooms and provide instruction to young adolescents.
