Contemporary South Korean Culture and Society

Catalog description

This course is designed to introduce students to Korean culture and society with a focus on major social and historical changes related to contemporary Korean culture. The course will explore diverse themes relevant to understanding Korea today, such as a brief history of Korea, modernization, multiculturalism, gender and education issues, lifestyle as well as traditional and contemporary popular culture. This course will combine lectures with analysis and discussions of various media such as texts, literature, films, newspaper articles as well as audio-visual artifacts including Korean news, films, TV dramas and pop songs in class. Instruction is in English.
