This course examines the causes, key events and consequences of the Russian revolutionary movement that culminated in the overthrow of the autocracy and establishment of the world's first socialist state in 1917. It explores both Western and Soviet historians' interpretations of the revolution and compares revolutionary experiences across classes, genders and nationalities in different parts of the Russian empire.
