The Civil War and Reconstruction are arguably the central events in United States History. But in the last several decades, the ways in which historians and other Americans interpret and remember the Civil War era have radically changed. This course critically examines these developments through the eyes of Frederick Douglass, a radical abolitionist and self-proclaimed "woman's rights man," who profoundly shaped Americans' views on slavery, abolition and civil rights for Black and female Americans.
