Catalog description

Provides opportunities for students to acquire and apply knowledge of psychosocial characteristics of individuals within the framework of the nursing process. Major topics address human needs related to sexuality, emotional security, communication and cognition, love and belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization. Emphasis is placed on the nursing care of patients experiencing psychosocial health challenges, with a focus on evidence-based practice, therapeutic communication, and patient-centered, collaborative care. Building upon general education, applied general education, and foundational nursing coursework, students further integrate concepts of leadership, research-informed decision-making, and professional communication. The role of community factors in psychosocial health is introduced, broadening the student's understanding of mental health within diverse populations and settings. Structured laboratory and clinical experiences provide opportunities for students to practice therapeutic communication, develop effective interpersonal relationships, and deliver safe, competent nursing care to individuals with psychosocial health needs.
