— Care of the Childbearing Family for the Prelicensure BSN

Catalog description

Provides opportunities for students to apply the nursing process in the care of the childbearing family. Emphasis is placed on understanding the characteristics and needs of individuals and families with a primary focus on the human need for sexuality. Major content areas include pregnancy, labor and delivery, postpartum care, the newborn, and male and female reproductive health. Students build upon prior general education, applied general education, and foundational nursing coursework as they integrate evidence-based practice, research-informed decision-making, and critical thinking into planning and delivering care. Concepts of leadership, professional communication, and interprofessional collaboration are woven throughout, highlighting the importance of partnering with childbearing families to promote safe, patient-centered care. The course also introduces the influence of community and population health factors on maternal and newborn outcomes. Clinical experiences in structured settings allow students to demonstrate psychomotor proficiency, clinical judgment, and competence in caring for diverse childbearing families.
