Catalog description

Provides an overview of the roles, requirements and features of selected healthcare professions. Introduction to basic responsibilities for patient care including professionalism, communication and legal/ethical considerations will be made with facilitation for student performance during lab sessions. Content related to the preparation for patient care will be examined including the utilization of appropriate medical terminology and abbreviations, charting and documentation in the clinical setting. Laboratory sessions will focus on competency in patient positioning, bed mobility, transfers, basic gait and transport techniques, selection and fitting of mobility aids and wheelchairs, basic ADL and home safety, infection control procedures and aseptic techniques, sterilization and disinfection of equipment, and basic bedside assessment of the patient including vital signs, heart and lung sounds, communication skills and age-appropriate considerations. Offered: Summer, Spring Corequisites: BIO 1000 or BIO 1110 .
