Medieval Art and Visual Culture (WI)

Catalog description

Students will explore the art and architecture of Medieval Europe, North Africa, and West and Central Asia. Topics will include the influence of Christianity and Islam on the art, architecture, and visual culture produced in the regions studied. Major attention will be given to the social, political, economic, and spiritual contexts of major monuments and arts production. Students will practice visual analysis and gain a basic understanding of the methods and aims of art historical study. (Writing Intensive Course)
