Applied Kinesiology in OT

PREREQUISITES: PRE/COREQUISITES: COREQUISITES: DESCRIPTION: Introduces the OTA student to the science and application of kinesiology, the study of movement, and involves principles of anatomy, physiology, physics, biomechanics, and geometry. Examines principles of human movement including analysis of biomechanics, joint structure and function, and musculoskeletal function. Prerequisite knowledge of skeletal and muscular anatomy and physiology is necessary. Designed for occupational therapy assistant (OTA) students with a focus on the clinical application of kinesiology to support development and treatment in children, rehabilitation in adults, and occupational performance and participation throughout the lifespan. Class will consist of lectures, demonstrations, and student participation in locating, observing, and palpating bony prominences and muscles. Much of kinesiology requires independent study to memorize origin, insertion, action, and innervation of muscles. The knowledge gained in this course is an integral part of a student’s preparation for the practice of occupational therapy as an occupational therapist assistant.
