Catalog description
This course introduces and familiarizes the student with the basic abdominal anatomy and physiology related to abdominal sonography. The student will also learn to identify cross sectional/relational and sonographic anatomy, and embryologic organ development. The sonographer’s role in the examination of organs will be discussed. Pathologies of the organ structures are covered as well as pathophysiologic effects on organs, systems and appearances. Also discussed are the indications for hepatic, biliary and pancreatic examinations. The review of a patients history and physical examination and laboratory values will be utilized. Use of alternate, concordant, and correlating imaging procedures will be discussed. Patient care during exams, exam modification based on patient status, and pathological processes will be discussed.
