The emphasis is on the comprehension of native spoken and written Japanese. The course introduces reading and writing Japanese syllabic symbols and selected Kanji characters. It also presents general aspects of Japanese daily life and culture. Throughout the course, grammar plays a supportive role in the acquisition of basic competency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding Japanese. JA 1 is equivalent to two years of high school Japanese. Credit may be earned in either JA 1 or 1H, but not both.
