This course is a survey of the scope, definition and culture of the West in a global context from the rise of Paleolithic and Neolithic societies in Eurasia to the Protestant Reformation in Europe. Emphasis will be on the major developments in the cultural, political, and social history of the ancient Near East, Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Europe from Late Antiquity through the Reformation.
