Catalog description

Discu ssion of the principles governing the processes of gene expression, DNA replication, transcription, translation, recombination, and gene regulation in eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Emphasis will be placed on the study of the structure and function of nucleic acids, genes, and eukaryotic and prokaryotic chromosomes. The molecular mechanisms and techniques that allow the manipulation of viruses, bacteria, yeast, and mammalian cells to generate expression systems that produce biotherapeutics for human use will be studied. The laboratory component will use molecular methods of gene manipulation and editing, supported by bioinformatics tools, which will illustrate the real-life processes used in biopharmaceutical manufacturing and research and development environments. Requires 30 lecture hours and 45 laboratory hours.
