An introductory examination of the Islamic tradition from its origins, its development and geographical spread, to its present status as a set of diverse world religious communities. Particular attention is given to the basic teachings of Islam as they appear in various communities that make up contemporary Islam. Attention is also given to contemporary issues (such as modernity, current conflicts), interfaith efforts, and the situation of Islamic communities in America.
