The state sometimes intentionally inflicts harm on its own citizens. That is the nature of legal punishment. Can this be morally justified? If so, how? What are the limits of morally justifiable legal punishment? is capital punishment morally justified? And what is the nature of the law and th elegal systems by which all of this is done? Readings will come from both contemporary and classical sources in ethics, political philosophy, and the philosophy of law.
