Introduction to Music Therapy

This course provides an overview of the field of music therapy, introducing students to the basic principles and practices of using music as a therapeutic tool. Students will explore how music can be applied to address the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals across various populations, including those with developmental, neurological, and psychological conditions. Topics include the history of music therapy, its role in clinical practice, methods, approaches, ethical considerations and an introduction to populations and settings in the field. Through lectures, case examples, observations, and experiential learning, students will gain insight into how music therapy promotes healing and improves quality of life. This course is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in music thearpy, the arts, or other helping professions, including healthcare, education, counseling, and social services.
