Catalog description

The purpose of this course is to present basic issues related to the etiology and treatment of substance abuse and addiction. The course will present current etiological models of substance use disorders and will provide biological, behavioral, and sociocultural perspectives within which to view these disorders. The class will consider not only the particular mechanisms of action of different drugs of abuse, but the subjective experiences engendered by the drugs and the social milieus of those most likely to abuse particular substances. This etiological and neurobiological information will provide a context for considering different treatment approaches, from assessment to intervention and monitoring.
