Professional development is an ongoing process through which students are socialized into the culture of psychology by learning and refining skills, knowledge, and abilities within the context of their own values and beliefs. This is a process that is influenced by the individual student, faculty members, and school. Professional development is a result of a complex interplay of experiences that begins in graduate school and continues throughout one’s life as a professional. This course provides a broad understanding of the profession of psychology, the competencies that are essential for professionals in the field, the various requirements of the Department of Psychological Sciences (DoPS), and the developmental process through which students move towards becoming professionals in the field. To accomplish this, students will also be required to engage in critical self-examination and reflection about their own values, assumptions, and beliefs.
