Catalog description

An introductory-level gerontology course. It will provide the student with an introduction and overview of the field of gerontology including terminology, theoretical perspectives, research and demography, public policy, ageism, history of the study of aging, cross-cultural study of aging, end-of-life issues, career exploration, and professional ethics. Course investigations will include readings from texts and articles, accessing Web sites, and exploring methods for transferring learning into application. Course assignments will include projects that will require students to interact with aging adults and aging professionals and projects that will require students to explore personal value systems and perceptions of aging. Students must maintain a grade of C or better in GERO courses to receive credit towards the Undergraduate Certificate in Aging Studies. Students who later choose to apply to the MS degree in Gerontology do not have to repeat the successfully completed Core courses at the graduate level (GERO 501, 505, 510, and 520) and may take other GERO topics of their choice to replace those credits.
