ENGL 479
Whirling Prize/Book Publishing
University of Indianapolis · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Students are exposed to recently published or unpublished literary works. The Whirling Literary Prize course focuses on building editorial reading and judging knowledge while the Chapbook Publishing Contest includes both editorial and publishing knowledge. In the fall, Etchings Press hosts the international Whirling Prize and awards a prize to published books in the categories of poetry and prose. The books are submitted by the authors in response to an annual theme selected by students, and students read and choose the two winners and confer the prizes. In the winter, students run a regional chapbook and novella contest, where they judge, edit, design, and publish the winning books.
