Literacy Foundations II

Catalog description

This course focuses on building knowledge and skills about the foundations of literacy development and principles of scientifically based reading instruction. There is an emphasis on application of word recognition skills and the development of language comprehension, including the role of vocabulary, background knowledge, verbal reasoning, syntax, semantics, and literacy knowledge to support skilled, proficient reading. Candidates will develop knowledge about effective instructional strategies that support deep comprehension of text as well as principles of effective writing instruction. Attention will be given to the role of motivation and engagement as well as developmentally appropriate practice.
