This methods course focuses on children’s literacy development in PreK and kindergarten. Instructional assessment strategies are demonstrated and applied in field experiences developing all six language arts areas: reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and visually representing. Special emphasis will be made on developing children’s concepts about print, phonemic awareness, letter knowledge and phonics, high frequency sight words and vocabulary, and comprehension and fluency. Candidates learn about a balanced literacy program that includes reading aloud, shared reading and writing, and inquiry through play. The use of multicultural children’s literature to support and motivate beginning readers will be incorporated. This is a three-credit hour course that includes 15 hours of field experience embedded in the course with small groups of children in PreK and kindergarten.
