Introduction to Policing

Catalog description

This course introduces the student to the history, functions, and challenges of American policing. Students will learn how the police have evolved, are funded, organized, managed, recruited, and trained. Students will also be taught how police services are delivered through patrol and investigative operations and the challenges presented in doing so, including use of foce, ethics, civil liability, and legitimacy. Throughout the course, students will be guided to critically assess policing in our democracy from the perspectives of both the citizen and the officer.
