Human Sexuality and Intimacies

Catalog description

This course explores cultural and biological anthropological perspectives on human sexuality and intimacy. Through readings, lectures, class discussions and field research assignments students will examine human sexuality and intimate relationships from evolutionary, cultural constructivist and critical theoretical perspectives. Through ethnographic case studies of sexual and intimate relationships from a variety of cultural contexts, students will gain familiarity with the diversity of cultural beliefs and practices regarding sexual and romantic relationships and behaviors. Students will explore global issues related to human sexuality including: sexual commerce, declining marriage and fertility rates, sexual assault. They will also examine shifting cultural understandings of sexual and romantic relationships, such as queer sexualities, the rise of companionate marriage ideals, dating applications, and challenges to compulsory heterosexuality and marriage.
