Catalog description

Manual and Automatic Drivetrain Systems provides comprehensive instruction in the diagnosis, service, and repair of automotive manual transmissions, automatic transmissions, transaxles, clutches, driveshafts, differentials, and four-wheel-drive systems. Students learn gear ratio principles, torque converter operation, hydraulic and electronic transmission controls, and modern drivetrain technologies including continuously variable transmissions (CVTs), dual- clutch transmissions (DCTs), and hybrid vehicle drivetrains. The course emphasizes transmission fluid maintenance, clutch service, component inspection, hydraulic pressure testing, and electronic control system diagnosis using scan tools and manufacturer specifications. Students develop hands-on skills in transmission removal and installation, differential service, driveshaft and CV joint repair, and four-wheel-drive system diagnosis. This course prepares students for ASE A2 Automatic Transmission/Transaxle and A3 Manual Drive Train and Axles certifications and equips them with the knowledge and skills necessary for successful careers as automotive technicians specializing in drivetrain systems.
