Catalog description
Engine Performance provides comprehensive instruction in the diagnosis, service, and repair of computerized engine management systems, fuel delivery systems, ignition systems, and emission control technologies. Students will analyze sensor operation (switches, thermistors, potentiometers, position sensors, oxygen sensors, airflow sensors, and pressure sensors), diagnose powertrain control module (PCM) functions, and test actuators using scan tools, digital multimeters, and oscilloscopes. The course covers modern engine technologies including diesel, variable valve timing (VVT), gas direct injection (GDI), forced induction systems (turbochargers and superchargers), and advanced emission control strategies. Students will perform on-board diagnostics (OBD-II) procedures, retrieve and interpret diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), analyze freeze frame data, conduct drive cycles, and verify emission system operation following EPA regulations. Emphasis is placed on systematic drivability diagnosis, fuel management strategies, ignition system service, and intake/exhaust system testing to ensure optimal engine performance and emissions compliance. This course prepares students for ASE A8 Engine Performance certification and equips them with the technical knowledge and diagnostic skills necessary for successful careers as automotive service technicians specializing in engine performance and emission systems.
