Foundations in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Language Structure

Catalog description

This course provides the tools to implement research-based reading instruction related to phonological awareness (including phonemic awareness), phonics, and fluency within the framework of the Science of Reading. Candidates will explore the neurological foundations of reading development, including dyslexia, while learning to assess, plan, and teach foundational literacy skills through explicit and systematic instruction. Through the field experience, candidates will apply their knowledge by conducting a phonics assessment, analyzing data, and implementing evidence-based instructional strategies for an elementary student. Emphasis is placed on the interrelationship between phonological awareness (including phonemic awareness), phonics, and fluency, with attention to culturally responsive teaching practices that support all students in developing a strong literacy foundation. Field experience required.
