Teaching Phonological Awareness and Phonics for Elementary Educators

This course examines the Science of Reading through a comprehensive exploration of phonics, phonological awareness (including phonemic awareness), fluency, and the interrelationship between all components of reading development. Candidates will learn how the brain processes reading, with special attention to dyslexia and diverse learning needs. Through the field experience, candidates will administer a phonics assessment, analyze data, and implement an explicit, systematic, and differentiated lesson plan for an elementary student. Emphasis is also given to culturally responsive practices and digital tools while developing skills to effectively communicate with families from diverse backgrounds. Access to a lower elementary student required. Prerequisite: EDUT-310
