Mathematics Methods and Materials

Catalog description

This course is designed for elementary education majors and focuses on effective methods and materials for teaching mathematics in grades K-6. Emphasis is placed on developmentally appropriate, sequential instruction aligned with the Indiana State Mathematics Standards. Teacher candidates will explore evidence-based instructional strategies that promote conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and real-world problem solving. Special attention is given to the use of concrete materials and multiple representations to support mathematical thinking. Students will also learn to incorporate purposeful technology tools to enhance instruction, engage learners, and support data-informed decision-making. Throughout the course, candidates will implement high-quality instructional materials and analyze student data to plan responsive instruction that meets diverse learner needs.This course is taken while, and includes a field experience to support the application of course content. Prerequisite: MAT 111 (or equivalent). Throughout the course, students are encouraged to recognize their calling as educators and their role in becoming world changers through impactful, informed mathematics instruction.
