Instrumental Methods

Catalog description

This course focuses on developing the knowledge, philosophy, pedagogy, and dispositions required of school instrumental music educators for 5th-12th grade band and orchestra students. Topics include administration, curriculum development, literature selection, instructional planning, appropriate and adaptable assessment strategies, and teaching practices that are developmentally appropriate for adolescent students. An emphasis will also be placed on practically applying inclusive practices for meeting the physical and neurological needs of students with (dis)abilities through differentiation, curriculum design, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and other evidence-based practices specific to instrumental ensemble classrooms. A blend of coursework and field experiences will put theory into practice. Prerequisites: MUS 420, 421, 422, 423, or consent of instructor, and admission to BCP I Co-requisites: MUS 393 and 490.
