Catalog description

The purpose of this course is to deepen the student’s awareness and understanding of the different ways human experience is reflected in popular musical arts and will emphasize the development of skills necessary to understand western popular music in a meaningful way. This will be accomplished through the study and evaluation of: basic music terminology, standard forms used within western popular music, stylistic elements that characterize musical periods and their artists; relationships between music and society; effective listening techniques; and prominent artists and selected works. Prerequisite: Successful completion or concurrent enrollment in Junior Composition Other Restrictions: Requires 45 earned credit hours or more at time of registration.
